Low water bridge

A low water bridge is a bridge built to allow water to flow over it during high water. Without sides to stop the flow, along with being built purposely low to the water level, the bridge allows high water to flow over it to prevent bridge damage. This one is in Randolph Co. on Low bridge road. The road is projected to be paved and a new bridge built within the next two years.

Sandy Creek Baptist church

Sandy Creek Baptist church is referred to as "The mother of southern baptist churches". Founded in 1775, the first structure burned down in 1785.......the second was blown down by a storm.......and the third and present structure was built in 1826. Recently, the present church renovated the old log church to it's original form.

I've always been told that the church members(back then) would arrive with their  slaves and the slaves would sit in the loft.
A service is still held in the church every 3rd Sunday.

Later, my grandfather was a preacher and served at Sandy Creek church. As a result, I have the minutes to the church from 1876 to 1902. A church committee would meet every month and start by asking if there where any complaints about other church members. Complaints ranged from public intoxication to adultery to swearing and disorderly conduct(fighting). Here is an example of a complaint of someone joining the Methodist church. They would form a committee to visit the wayward member and invite them to attend the next meeting, ask forgiveness, and be retained as members.  

A mental health day

When I need an emotional recharge, I look for what comforts my soul..........  a trip to Johnson's in Siler City for the best comfort food around. Not only is the cheeseburger and fries the best to be found, no one is a stranger as Mr. Johnson will treat you like he has known you all your life.

  Afterwards, a visit to a friends farm..........peaceful surroundings heals the soul. 

Hunt's Strawberries

One of my favorite childhood memories was strawberry picking season. There was always a nearby strawberry farm where you picked your own. There is not much better than a fresh picked strawberry warmed by the sun.  All ages enjoy picking their own at Hunt's strawberries. The pet turkeys are an added bonus.

Leon

I had a good visit from my friend Leon. We took the wives to the scrap exchange............but we couldn't find anything better............so we kept them. We went fishing at my neighbor's private pond...........Had a nice, relaxing visit.

Liz's Birthday

For Liz's birthday, i gave Liz a day at the Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park. Located in Scotland Neck, It is considered the World's largest waterfowl park. We had a great time as we were up close and personal with exotic birds. Be careful where you step..................................
